Sources of Inspiration

"Where The Wild Things Are"; Maurice Sendak

Among Will's favorite authors are Maurice Sendak, Arnold Lobel, and E.H. Shepard. He finds himself caught up in the spirit of Sendak, whose characters are costumed, animated and orchestrated across richly drawn stages. In the work of Shepard and Lobel, Will admires the ability to create animal characters who are fully individual, yet who remain true to their animal nature and environment.

"The Wind in the Willows"; E.H. Shepard

The small heroes in Shepard's pictures -- Pooh and Piglet, Mole and Rat -- seem fragile and vulnerable, a quality which appears in many Hillenbrand drawings, especially of children. In recent years, Will also has been impressed with the books of Ashley Bryan, which exhibit a vibrant energy and profound appreciation for experiences that unite differing cultures.
